Tokyo - Omiya
This article is incomplete. More information will be added in future versions of this guide.
Tired of the big city life and want to see what the real Japan looks like? Omiya-Koen is a small day trip from Tokyo. It’s not the most exciting destination but the combination of the bonsai museum, a large park with a nice temple and zoo make this a good destination for families or, perhaps, a date.
There is a nice bonsai museum.
The Bonsai museum has English signage explaining the process of how to get to a beautiful bonsai tree. They regularly change the different bonsai trees on display.
You are not allowed to take pictures in most of the museum but there is a designated area with about 10 trees where you can.
If you are interested in buying bonsai, walk around the neighborhood - there are a few gardens you can enter that also function as bonsai tree shops.
- Directions: from Tokyo, take the train to Omiya-Koen
Omiya Koen Zoo
Omiya Koen contains a small zoo with a surprising variety of animals. There’s monkeys, a bear, and some exotic birds. They have some Japan-only animals too.
When I was there I got to hold a snake, which was a fun yet slightly stressful experience.
